Remembering a great: Health and Panchayat Raj Minister of West Bengal Surjakanta Mishra and Orissa State secretary of the CPI(M) Janardan Pati offering tributes at the statue of Utkalmani Gopabandhu Dash on his 130th birth anniversary in an old-age home 42 Mouja in Cuttack district on Tuesday. The Lokasakti Trust organised the programme. — BERHAMPUR: The birth anniversary of Utkalmani Gopabandhu Dash was celebrated as ‘Seva Divas’ for the first time in the State by students of MKCG Medical College and Nursing College on its campus. NSS units of both these institutions had taken the initiative to keep alive the spirit of service in the minds of students who opted for these service-oriented professions, said Jhansi Singh, NSS coordinator of Berhampur University. Selfless serviceUtkalmani’s name was synonymous to selfless service in Orissa. During the British era, the great leader had become the saviour of thousands of people hit by floods and famine in Orissa. Principal of MKCG Medical College Sonamali Bag and principal of Nursing College Amrita Lenka attended the function organised to mark the occasion. Mr. Bag called upon medical and nursing students not to see the profession as a means of earning. “Almighty has given us a great chance to serve people and we should avail ourselves of the opportunity learning from the life and teachings of Gopabandhu,” he said. Blood donationThe celebration of his birth anniversary as Seva Divas was a homage to the great leader and his ideals, said Amrita Lenka. A blood donation camp was organised on the campus in the afternoon. NSS programme officer of MKCG Medical College Sagar Prusty of the Anatomy Department used the occasion to organise a special seminar. SeminarThe topic was better community service by professionals. Participants attending the seminar pointed out that medical professionals and nurses were easily available to serve unknown people abroad. But due to lack of interest, medical staff were still unavailable in remote areas of the State.
