BHUBANESWAR: The city may be witnessing a big controversy over ‘right to sell vegetables’ after the Reliance Industries Limited rolled out its retail plan. But, the general customers are silently suffering due to steep rise in vegetable prices. It has been over two months since vegetable prices have gone through the roof. This apart, the sudden rise in the price of onion is forcing people to rework their daily menus. The average price of every vegetable is above Rs. 25. This is causing anxiety among people, particularly with the holy month of Kartik coming closer. The market price of tomato has touched Rs. 22 a kg. Similarly, the price of beans has gone up to Rs. 35. Brinjal and cauliflower are being sold for Rs. 30 an Rs. 32 respectively. “ It is difficult to celebrate the forthcoming festival months with enthusiasm,” Sashirekha Behera, a housewife, says. “What can we do? We are treading on marginal profit due to the price rise,” says Pramod Swain, a roadside vendor.
