Students show little interest in polls

BERHAMPUR: Students of Berhampur University seem to be lacking interest in union elections this year.

While candidates were filing nomination papers on Tuesday, the students residing in hostels of the university were busy preparing to return home.

Sources said that by afternoon almost 50 per cent of the students of the girls’ hostel vacated. Similar was the situation at the boys’ hostels.

Some 30 per cent of the students had already left the hostels and the rest were planning to go home soon. Most of the boarders said they did not want to get entangled in violent situations like during the previous year. The university had to be closed due to clashes following union elections.

Most of the hostellers seemed to be interested in enjoying a long Puja vacation. The elections were to be held on October 15 and the university was to close for Puja vacation from October 17. Students were of the opinion that there would be no study atmosphere on the campus till October 15 and even classes might get suspended. So, the hostellers thought it fit to go home rather than staying till October 15 for the polls. The candidates were seen coaxing boarders to stay till Oct 15. Implementation of the Lyngdoh Commission report had already taken away the fizz out of the students’ polls on the campus. Meanwhile, filing of nomination papers passed off peacefully amidst tight security. No untoward incidents were reported at Khallikote Autonomous College of the city too.
