NEW DELHI: A large number of activists of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha on Tuesday held a protest demonstration against the Blueline buses and demanded resignation of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf “for their failure to protect the citizens from the killer buses”. During their march to Delhi Secretariat, the protesters, led by Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan, also burnt effigies of Blueline buses and the two leaders. Addressing the protesters, Dr. Vardhan said the manner in which Ms. Dikshit and Mr. Yusuf had expressed helplessness in providing an alternative to the Blueline buses indicated that the Delhi Government was in connivance with the bus operators. “The Government is deliberately neither reining in the buses nor is it ready for any alternative transport system. It is the result of corruption in the Transport Department and Delhi the Government that the bus operators are benefiting and innocent citizens are being killed by these buses,” he charged. “False promises”Dr. Vardhan claimed that “all the promises made by the Delhi Government so far have proved to be false and this year alone 95 innocent citizens have lost their lives to these rashly driven buses”. The BJP leader said the failure of the Delhi Government in this episode was evident from the manner in which the High Court had proposed to come forward to monitor these buses. Also, he said, the L-G has been compelled by the increasing incidence of Blueline accidents to talk about deploying the Army to monitor them.BJYM general secretary Ravinder Gupta, said the Delhi Government should provide an alternative to Blueline buses or step down. “On the one hand there is talk about making Delhi like Shanghai and Paris, but on the other citizens are being killed on the roads of Delhi every day. Is this the world-class city that we are trying to create?” he asked. Goel’s assertionBJP secretary Vijay Goel on Tuesday announced that he would take a Blueline bus on Wednesday from Red Fort to Badarpur and pick up C M Sheila Dikshit on the way to give her an idea of how unsafe people feel on the roads.
