MANGALORE/MADIKERI: The KSRTC drivers and conductors from the two ends of the traffic jam arranged for an exchange of passengers. This gave room to a new drama: two long parallel queues of people started walking in opposite directions in the dark. Hundreds of elderly people, the little ones and even a pregnant woman used mobile phones for light as they lugged their belongings for close to six km to get on to the other side of the jam and into the exchange vehicles. As confusion reigned, thieves had a field day stealing the belongings of the passengers. Passengers and truck drivers were involved in a brawl as the latter refused to make way for the retreating buses. It was not as though everyone got on to the alternative bus – some passengers, who were too old, weak or scared to venture out in the dark, refused to get off the vehicle – they perhaps had to wait till 7 a.m.
