Bidar Fort: High Court asks Government for records

Staff Correspondent

Bangalore: The Karnataka High Court has adjourned further hearing on a petition by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the State Government challenging the grant of a part of land by the Bidar Land Tribunal, within the famed mediaeval Bidar Fort, to beneficiaries.

The ASI is in charge of the maintenance and upkeep of the fort built by the Bahman Shahs who ruled over vast areas of north Karnataka, including the districts of Bijapur, Gulbarga, Bidar, Ahmednagar and other areas. The ASI’s contention is that the fort is a protected monument and not to be tampered with. It said the land within the fort could not have been granted under any circumstances. It said even though the Assistant Commissioner, who is part of the tribunal, had objected to the grant, the other members had gone ahead with the grant. When the matter came up, the court informed the Government that it had asked the State Government to produce records relating to the land grant.

When the Government sought more time to produce the records, the court adjourned further hearing on the matter.
