Muriyad farmers intensify stir
Staff Reporter
Irinjalakuda: The Muriyad Kayal Krishi Samrakshana Samithy, comprising of a section of farmers in Muriyad, has intensified its agitation (Karshaka Munnettam) demanding steps to make kole lands in the region cultivable.
The area under paddy cultivation in Muriyad has shrunk from 4,452 hectares to 2,833 hectares on account of alleged indiscriminate sand/clay mining, conversion of paddy fields to brick kilns, and large-scale procurement of land from indigent farmers by private sand miners.
Large tracts are waterlogged because of improper drainage of water from bunds.
Farmers’ demands
The demands of the farmers include a permanent ban on sand mining, completion of the Kerala Land Development Corporation (KLDC) canal bund, removal of blockages to the natural flow of water, and setting of a kole land development authority exclusive to Muriyad.
“Hundreds of farmers are facing poverty. All political parties except the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India have extended support to us,” alleged K.V. Joshy of the Samithy.
