President releases stamps on IAF

NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil released a set of postage stamps on the Indian Air Force’s Platinum Jubilee on Monday.

Ms. Patil unveiled four stamps on the IAF depicting its past, present and future. These include stamps showing the Westland Wapiti aircraft ; the indigenous Dhruv helicopter already been inducted into the armed forces; the Il-78, an air-to-air refueller that significantly enhances the reach of fighter planes; and the eye-in-the-sky AWACS aircraft, to be inducted next year. IT Minister A. Raja presented the stamps to the President at the residence of the IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major, in the presence of United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar and other senior Union Ministers.

Mr. Ansari released a book Into the blue yonder that explains the role and functioning of the IAF.
