This Day That Age
The Finance Minister, Mr. T.T. Krishnamachari, told reporters after calling on President Eisenhower in Washington on October 8 that he had been successful in making some important people in the US see India’s point of view. “What happens thereafter is something you cannot say,” he replied when asked how successful was his mission of enlisting aid for India’s Second Five-Year Plan. He said nothing specific came up during his 30-minute meeting with the US President at the White House. “It was a very general talk. I thought if I went away without seeing the President, my visit would not be perfect. He was kind enough to see me and we had a very general survey of our problems. He showed a great deal of interest. ” Mr. Krishnamachari had arrived in Washington a fortnight ago to attend the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and to discuss India’s foreign exchange gap, in connection with the Second Plan, of 1,400 million dollars.
