Corrections and clarifications

  • In a report “CPI(M), CPI seek elections in Karnataka” (October 9, 2007), the total strength in the Karnataka Assembly was incorrectly said to be 244. It should have been 224.

  • In the box item (“IAF milestones) accompanying an article “More than mere air warriors” (The Hindu-Magazine, October 7, 2007, page 4), a pointer was “1993: The first Women Officer batch was commissioned on 21 June”. A reader (she was a member of the first batch of 25 engineers commissioned in the 16SSC Aeronautical Engineers’ course at the Air Force Technical College, Jalahalli, Bangalore) says that it should have been April 6, 1993. The writer clarifies that the first batch of women to be “inducted as officers” was in April 1993. However, women were first “inducted” into the air force in 1992, spent a year in training and were commissioned as officers in June 1993. The reader’s batch joined the air force in 1993 straightaway as officers. Technically they came later than the 1992 batch. The pointer should have read as “The first women’s batch to be inducted into the air force was in 1992 and they were commissioned as officers on 21 June 1993.”

  • The seventh paragraph of a report “Swann restricts Sri Lanka” (“Sport”, October 8, 2007) said that fast bowler Stuart Broad got the wicket of Jayawardene off his first delivery as the former flicked a loose ball and was caught by Paul Collingwood for only two. The Sports Desk clarifies that Mahela Jayawardene did get out cutting, caught at point by Collingwood off Graeme Swann, and not on a flick shot. (The report was on the third ODI cricket match in Sri Lanka.)

  • The tenth paragraph in a report “England sneaks home in a low-scoring encounter” (“Sport”, October 8, 2007) was: “Chris Broad began with a wicket from a gross long hop and then stood open-mouthed when Kumar Sangakkara left the wicket without just cause ….” “Chris Broad” should have been “Stuart Broad”. (A similar correction on the mix-up between Stuart Broad and Chris Broad was published on August 29, 2007.)

  • R. Sivakumar is the managing director (South Asia), Intel Technology India Pvt. Ltd. He is not the Member, IT and Communications panel, FICCI, Tamil Nadu State Council, as mentioned in the caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “AAI promises world-class facilities at Chennai airport” (Tamil Nadu, October 6, 2007, page 8).
