High Court grants bail to Lovely Anand

Special Correspondent

PATNA: The Patna High Court on Tuesday granted bail to the former Member of Parliament, Lovely Anand, who was sentenced to life imprisonment a week ago by a lower court in the G. Krishnaiah lynching case.

A Division Bench of Justices S. Singh and S.M. Mahfooz Alam, after perusing the records that were summoned from the Patna District and Sessions Court, accepted Ms. Anand’s bail petition.

The High Court maintained that no witness had, in their evidence, proved that Ms. Anand left her car and incited the crowd to kill the then Gopalganj District Magistrate.

The Bench wondered how the prosecution could prove that it was at her calling that the crowd turned violent and lynched the official.

Fine stayed

The Bench also stayed the fine of Rs. 25,000 imposed on her by the lower court while awarding the life sentence.

Not yet released

The former MP was not released from the Central Jail in Beur, where she is lodged, by evening as necessary formalities were yet to be fulfilled.
