MUMBAI: Vijay Merchant XI, ahead by 174 in the first innings, was 104 for five in its second essay against Vijay Manjrekar XI on the second day of the four-day 22nd Sportstar Trophy under-19 MCA selection trial tournament first round at the Elf Vengsarkar Academy Oval. Manjrekar XI, 18 for one overnight, was bowled out for 110 with off-spinner Rehmani Sufiyan (11-5-18-5) who had chipped in with 37 on the first day, playing wrecker-in-chief. Merchant XI captain Sushant Khaire made an attacking 49 in the second innings with seven fours and a six. Dattu Phadkar XI grabbed the vital lead against Khandu Rangnekar XI in another league tie at the Karnataka ground. It was helped by an unbeaten last-wicket stand of 50 between new ball bowlers Balkrishna Shirke (11) and Shivraj Deshmukh (29). The scores: Vijay Merchant XI 284 and 104 for five (Sushant Khaire 49, Akshay Jambekar three for 26) vs Vijay Manjrekar XI 110 (Nadim Mehdi 29 n.o., Rehmani Sufiyan five for 18).
