Shweta Rana survives eight matchpoints

NEW DELHI: Shweta Chandra Rana emphasised her fighting spirit as she saved eight matchpoints to get past qualifier Carol Augustine 2-6, 7-6(10), 7-6(8) in the second round of the girls under-14 section in the DSCL National sub-junior tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Tuesday.

The fifth-seeded Shweta was in a spot of bother at 2-6, 2-5, but was quick on her feet and confident in her approach to escape the clutches of defeat, in a nerve-wracking contest that spanned two hours and 45 minutes.

In the boys’ under-16 section, Irfan Hussain got past Bibaswan Deb in three sets to set up an interesting clash against the fourth-seeded Rohit Bisht.

The top two seeds, Kaza Vinayak Sarma and N. Sai Karthik settled down nicely to the light balls that were flying off the racquet to emphasise their all-round game.

In the boys’ under-14 category, Saurabh Singh put out eighth-seeded R. Ramkumar of Tamil Nadu in straight sets to set up a pre-quarterfinal date against qualifier Suraj Beniwal.
