Fifth victory for Harika

NEW DELHI: Favourite D. Harika scored her fifth victory in six rounds and stayed in joint second spot in the girls’ section of the World junior chess championship at Yerevan, Armenia, on Monday.

Harika defeated USA’s Tatev Ahrahamyan in 36 moves to move to five points in the company of Sabrina Vega (Spain) and Sarah Hoolt (Germany).

Leader Vera Nebolsina of Russia defeated Eesha Karavade in 36 moves to maintain her all-win record. Sabrina stopped another Indian, Soumya Swaminathan in 33 moves.

Aswin stuns Bassem

In the Open section, Aswin Jayaram stunned seventh seed Bassem Amin of Egypt in 36 moves and joined teammate G.N. Gopal in the joint third spot at 4.5 points. Egypt’s Ahmed Adly and the Philippines’ Wesley So lead with five points.
