“STOP THE KILLERS”: Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha workers protesting against Blueline buses in Delhi on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: Hot on the heels of the terrible tragedy at Badarpur here this past Sunday when a Blueline bus ploughed into a waiting crowd at a temporary bus shelter killing seven persons, two more innocent lives were snuffed out by the killer fleet in and around the Capital on Tuesday.

Twenty-four-year-old Sunil Kumar was knocked down by a Blueline plying between Nizamuddin and Mehrauli while he was crossing the road at Pushp Vihar traffic intersection around 2 p.m. Passers-by rushed him to Batra Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The body was later shifted to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences for post-mortem. The victim was a resident of a slum cluster in Khanpur here and worked as a delivery boy at Pizza Hut.

Taking advantage of the melee that ensued the tragic accident, the driver vanished from the spot. However, the bus was impounded and a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving registered.

In the day’s other mishap, middle-aged Rajiv Shukla was killed on the spot in neighbouring Noida when a Blueline bus hit his motorcycle.

A resident of Mayur Vihar in Delhi, he had been working with a private company in the industrial township.

The accident took place around 11 a.m. near the Delhi Metro Rail construction site that witnesses heavy traffic congestion during rush hours.

“Rajiv was coming in from the wrong direction when the speeding bus plying between Bhajanpura and Noida hit his motorcycle on the left near Atta Pir Chowk. He fell on the road and died of head injuries. The bus has been impounded,” said a senior Noida Police officer.

Following the tragedy, agitated passers-by hurled stones at the bus and tried to set it on fire.

However, the police soon reached the spot and prevented the situation from getting out of hand.

“Sensing the people’s anger, the bus driver and conductor fled the spot. Had they not fled, they would have been lynched by the public,” said the police officer.
