SFI, NDF workers involved

SFI calls for boycott of classes, State-wide protest

Mannaniya College closed for indefinite period

Thiruvananthapuram: The Students Federation of India (SFI) has called for a district-wide boycott of classes following a clash between its activists and National Development Front workers at Mannaniya College at Kallara-Pangode on Tuesday.

As many as 17 SFI and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists were injured in the attack. Nine of them sustained deep cuts on heads, chest, legs and abdomen.

The seriously injured persons are being treated at the Medical College Hospital here.

The clash was sequel to a tense stand-off between NDF and SFI activists at the college on October 5, when NDF workers destroyed a party flag erected by the SFI on the college campus.

Around 11.45 a.m. on Tuesday, an armed group of NDF and Campus Front activists attacked SFI and DYFI workers when they attempted to re-install their party symbol inside the campus.

The police said some NDF workers were wielding swords. The SFI and Campus Front activists were supported by outside elements. The police searched the campus for arms and explosives.

NDF activists detained

The police have detained seven NDF activists. They have confiscated two vehicles used by the attackers. Shops and commercial establishments remained closed from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Pangode following a hartal call given by the DYFI.

The SFI has also called for a State-wide protest on Wednesday. SP, Rural, M. Sugathan, visited Pangode. The police have been deployed in strength at Kallara, Pangode and Bharathanoor.

The Mannaniya College has been closed for an indefinite period.
