TIRUVURU (Krishna dist.): A day after the custodial death of 55-year-old Velpula Venkateswara Rao,
Superintendent of the Excise and Prohibition on Tuesday issued orders suspending sub-inspector Rambabu and two constables, who were working in Tiruvuru depot.
Nuzvid Revenue Divisional Officer S. Venkata Rao announced payment of an ex gratia of Rs. 20,000 to the family members of the deceased, a sum of Rs. 5,000 from the National Family Benefit Scheme, widow pension to Rao’s wife Kumari and disabled pension to their elder son, besides sanctioning a house under Indira Awas Yojana scheme. The Excise police took Rao into custody from his house in Vinugadapa village on Friday on the charge of selling cheap liquor.
He died on Monday and the family members of the deceased alleged that the Excise police beat him to death.

Meanwhile, a fact-finding committee from the Krishna district unit of Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee alleged that it was a clear case of lockup death and demanded that murder case be booked against the Excise police. alleged that Rao was beaten to death.
