There appear to be several reasons for the sorry state of affairs

Revolting sight: Piled up garbage poses a challenge to sanitation and dogs add to the problem near Alluri Sitaramaraja Raju statue on Beach Road in Visakhapatnam.—

VISAKHAPATNAM: Notwithstanding its reputation, Beach Road is not always the tidy, trophy road that the city wants to flaunt. Every part of the city is entitled to being clean, not only because it is good to look at but more importantly, it prevents diseases from spreading. But on the beach road, as is the case everywhere, there are not enough bins and the available ones are not replaced as soon as they need to be. As a result, the people living there are facing problems.

There appear to be several reasons for the sorry state of affairs. Besides the residents, the street food vendors doing business nearby also throw garbage there. That’s one of the reasons the bins should be replaced more often, says a resident of Pandurangapuram. “The bins always appear to be full. One is not sure when they are replaced because they are always overflowing,” she adds.

Garbage and dogs are inseparable. With the bins overflowing dogs are always at it. Residents also seem to be responsible to some extent as they throw the garbage without going close to the bin. That’s the reason the garbage is littered all over the place. Officials respond to residents’ complaints and try to improve the situation. Neither can residents make complaints every day nor can officials intervene every day. Only a systematic and timely removal of the bins might improve the situation. That is important that tourists visiting the Beach Road should not carry the impression of it being sullied by garbage with them back home.
