CHENNAI: Shutdown of five power units in the State coupled with the sudden loss of wind energy of 1,000 MW on Tuesday reduced the availability of power by about 1,700 MW.
Usually, power demand in the State is around 8,500 MW. Consequent to the disruption, authorities are able to generate only 6,900 MW, according to a senior Electricity Board official.
An EB release said: “To manage this situation, regulated power supply is being given in rotation. It is expected that the situation will improve in a day or two.”
Of the five units (one each in Tuticorin, Ennore and North Chennai thermal power stations and two in the Neyveli station), two have resumed operation. The others would be brought back on stream soon. [While the Neyveli station is under the control of the Neyveli Lignite Station, the other stations are operated by the EB].
