Speedy completion of six laning of road sought

Members demand basic amenities for Sholinganallur residents


CHENNAI: Members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, including a large number of women, staged a demonstration at Sholinganallur on Tuesday.

They were demanding speedy completion of the six laning of Rajiv Gandhi Salai.

They also demanded basic amenities for people residing at Sholinganallur.

Minister’s reply

Condemning the demonstration, Vellakoil M.P.Swaminathan, State Highways Minister, in a statement here, said till the end of the AIADMK regime, the then Government had failed to complete the land acquisition work for expansion.

After the DMK came to power, the Government took efforts to solve the cases pending in the courts pertaining to the acquisition and completed carriage way to a distance of seven km. Other works had also been speeded up.

In order to complete the work at the earliest, the Minister along with officials inspected the stretch last month and it was not correct on the part of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to say that the work had been put in cold storage, Mr. Swaminathan said.
