MADURAI: V.B. Srivastava, a retired Second-in-Command of the Central Reserve Police Force, here on Tuesday was convicted of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
Special Judge of CBI Court C.V. Karthikeyan awarded him two-year imprisonment under Section 13 (2) read with Section 13 (1) (e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act,1998. According to the prosecution, the accused, belonging to Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, was a presiding officer for recruitment of constables at Madurai, from December 2003 to February 2004. As complaints emerged about the malpractices during the recruitment, a surveillance officer, G. Venkata Ranga Rao, was appointed.
On a tip-off from the surveillance officer, R.R. Jha, security de aide of the presiding officer, was intercepted at Chennai Central in February 2004. A bag and a suitcase containing Rs.9.3 lakh were seized from him. Meanwhile, Mr. Srivastava retired from service in January 2005. The prosecution said the accused could not cite any tangible source for the disproportionate assets worth Rs. 9.33 lakh found in his possession.
