Janata Party demands explicit clauses in nuclear deal

MADURAI: The Janata Party has mooted the inclusion of explicit clauses in the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal to declare India a “nuclear weapon power.”

Panel sought

In a resolution passed at its State executive committee meeting here on Tuesday, the party said such explicit clauses would protect India when it faced a compulsion in future to produce nuclear weapons for its security. It would also not make it dependent on the U.S. Reiterating its demand for a reassessment of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel project, the party sought the formation of an impartial committee of experts. It demanded a public apology from Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for his reported statements on Lord Ram. The party called for stringent action against those responsible for the attack on Bharatiya Janata Party office in Chennai.
