Kanchi Acharya moves court to quash ‘mutt accounts case’

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, has moved the Madras High Court to quash the ‘mutt accounts case’ registered against him.

The petition, filed by the Kanchi Sankaracharya and two others, said the allegations against them was that they had removed certain pages from the account books to shield vital evidence connected to the Sankararaman murder case.

Denying the allegations, the petitioners said they were entitled to keep the mutt accounts in order or in disorder, and that they could not be questioned in any manner by the Sivakanchi police unless it was traceable to the act of covering up of an offence.

Also, there cannot be a separate charge sheet for the offence, they said, and sought to quash the proceedings pending before the Puducherry court.

Justice S. Palanivelu, before whom the matter came up for admission, admitted the case and ordered notice to the respondent-police. He also dispensed with the personal appearance of the petitioners in court.
