Encouraging: Students posting letters to social activist Medha Patkar, in Tiruchi on Tuesday. TIRUCHI: The World Postal Day celebrations on Tuesday at Montfort School in Tiruchi served twin purposes. By writing letters en masse to Medha Patkar, the entire strength of 1,600 students and about 60 staff members not only patronised the Postal Department in a big way, they also used the occasion to express their solidarity with the social crusader’s environmental cause and relentless efforts to ensure justice to the poor masses, be it in the vast Narmada Dam project area, or Nandigram or Singur. The school invited and honoured postal staff across hierarchy on the special occasion. The invitees comprised the Assistant Director of Postal Services, G. Gurunathan; Manager – Business Development, K. Ravindran; Assistant Superintendent of Post Office, Selvaraj; the Post Master of Kattur Post Office, Hema, and the Postman, Karim Khan. They too joined the students and staff in writing letters to Medha Patkar. In sync with the slogan for the occasion: Bridging People, Building Nation, Principal Bro. Mariannan drew a parallel between the Postal Department and Medha Patkar, saying that both are networking in the country’s interests. Rain or shine, the postal department keeps providing the vital communication link with the outside world for the underprivileged masses in rural parts.
