PUDUCHERRY: Residents of Karaikal have reasons to rejoice. A centre of Pondicherry University will be inaugurated there on Wednesday. The Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Institute of Engineering and Technology received AICTE approval on Tuesday. Pondicherry University’s Post Graduate Centre, which has come up on its temporary campus in the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar College of Education Campus (PKCEC), will offer three courses, MCA, MBA and M. Com. (Finance) and will have a strength of 20 students for each of the courses. “ Almost 50 per cent of the seats have gone to students of the Karaikal region. We have advertised for faculty and we will be outsourcing faculty so that the quality of the input would be better,” Vice Chancellor J.A.K. Tareen told The Hindu. “The university has already utilised funds to the tune of Rs. 60 lakh. Member of Parliament M. Ramadass has earmarked Rs. 20 lakh from the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Fund. We are making a proposal to the Ministry of Human Resource Development for a permanent grant for this centre,” he added. Director of Studies S. Kuppuswami said regular classes at the centre would commence immediately. “Though we are starting the centre at a temporary venue, the Government of Puducherry has agreed to give us around 7 acres of land. Once we get the money, we will start the construction work.” Lt Governor Mukut Mithi will inaugurate the Post Graduate Centre in the presence of Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Members of Parliament M. Ramadass and V Narayanasamy and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly A.M.H. Nazeem. Nod for collegeThe AICTE approval for the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Institute of Engineering and Technology (PKIET), which functions under the Engineering College (Karaikal) Society, has been granted for three courses — Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering — with an intake of 60 students each for a period of two years. College Special Officer P. Thambidurai said the next stage is to get approval of the Pondicherry University.
