CHENNAI: The State Social Welfare Department will distribute aid to more than 18,000 persons who are physically challenged.
The decision was taken at a meeting to review the performances of the Social Welfare and Noon-Meal Scheme and Fisheries Departments held at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
An official release said the Social Welfare Department would allocate Rs. 3.38 crore for the purpose.
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had asked the department to expedite the process of scrutinising applications requesting financial assistance under the Moovalu Raamamirtham Ammayar Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme.
The Chief Minister also inspected the heavy vehicles, lifejackets, ice boxes, illumination lamps, sports equipment and first-aid boxes that were bought at a cost of Rs. 1.1 crore. These materials would be distributed to the residents of tsunami-affected villages in the State.
Mr. Karunanidhi also advised the Fisheries Department authorities to expedite works such as the renovation of four fishing harbours, construction of 10 new fish landing points, and the improving four river mouths in the State. During the meeting, the Chief Minister also announced a solatium of Rs. 1 lakh to the family of Warnakulasooriya Canicius Fernando, who was killed in front of the Central Prison in Madurai recently.
