All support for AIDS-hit, says Nehru

Staff Reporter

KULITHALAI: Those afflicted by HIV/AIDS need society’s care and support. The State Government will extend all support to voluntary agencies and non-governmental organisations working for the cause of HIV/AIDS victims, according to Transport Minister K. N. Nehru.

Launching the third phase of care and support schemes for HIV/AIDS-infected persons under the aegis of APAC-VHS, Chennai, and Gramium, Kulithalai, at a function here, Mr. Nehru pointed out that drivers and heavy vehicles cabin crew were most vulnerable to AIDS. Continuous vigil should be maintained against AIDS proliferation among the crew.

Call to women

Stating that women should take the lead in spreading awareness on fighting AIDS, especially in rural areas, Mr. Nehru underlined the pivotal role being played by NGOs in extending support to the victims.

The transport department had over 1,20,000 workers, a majority of whom would be sensitised over a period of time, he said.

Gramium Director P. Narayanan detailed the activities of the organisation and in particular HIV/AIDS intervention programmes in the industrialised Karur district.

He thanked the “continued support and faith” shown by APAC-VHS in coordinating efforts on the issue with Gramium.
