Move to facilitate road-widening work

People voluntarily remove illegal structures

Officials to be told not to fell trees indiscriminately

BIDAR: Officials of the City Municipal Council (CMC) cleared encroachments along roads to facilitate easy traffic movement in Bidar city on Wednesday.

The authorities carried out the drive from Madiwala circle to Nehru Stadium. Along the road, the authorities had identified the unauthorised portions of structures to be cleared, which comprised houses and commercial establishments.

At some places, the authorities had identified buildings which were about five feet away from the road for demolition. Signboards in front of commercial establishments were also removed. Many people voluntarily removed the unauthorised structures.

A resident, near Nehru stadium, appealed to the CMC authorities not to demolish the unauthorised portion of his house with an earthmover.

He assured them that he would voluntarily remove the structure. Private workers cleared the unauthorised structure later. During the drive, power supply was disconnected in the area.

Trees were either trimmed or uprooted to facilitate road-widening work.

Meanwhile, officials of the Forest Department told The Hindu that they would ask the CMC officials not to fell trees indiscriminately.

An official of the Bidar Development Authority (BDA) said a meeting was convened five days ago to inform the residents about the CMC drive.

Officials of the BDA also accompanied the CMC officials during the drive. Police personnel had provided security to prevent any untoward incident.
