Up in arms: Bharatiya Janata Party activists burning effigies of Janata Dal (Secular) leaders in Bijapur on Wednesday. BIJAPUR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists protested against the “betrayal” of the Janata Dal (Secular) that refused to hand over reins of power to the party, here on Wednesday. The activists led by district unit president Vithal Katakdonda, secretary Ramesh Bidnur and city unit president Ravikant Bagali took out a protest march in the main bazaar before burning the effigies of Janata Dal (Secular) leaders H.D. Deve Gowda and H.D. Kumaraswamy at Gandhi Chowk. BJP State council member and in charge of the district unit Shrikant Kulkarni and former MLA and vice-president of State unit of party’s Kisan Morcha S.K. Bellubbi, said the Janata Dal (S) leaders had lost credibility by not keeping their words. Such a “betrayal” had not taken place in the political history of the country, and it had brought disrespect the to State, they added. The BJP leaders said the Janata Dal (Secular) leaders had not been sincere about their promise from the beginning. People of the State also expected that Janata Dal (Secular) would honour the pact. However, the Janata Dal (Secular) leaders, particularly Mr. Kumaraswamy, chose to “betray” the BJP, they said. The people must decide whether such a political culture should be encouraged or punished, they said. Besides newly elected party councillors and office-bearers of different units of the party, senior members of Veerashaiva Mahasabha also took part in the protest.
