BERHAMPUR: People of Ganjam district celebrated the day of ‘Mahalaya’ as ‘Phuleri Amavasya’ on Wednesday. Simanchal Dash, a Sanskrit scholar and priest, said that the rituals related to maritime trading tradition of the region. “But, it is again worship of mother goddess that starts from Mahalaya,” he said. Centuries ago, traders used to embark on voyages to pacific islands for trading. During ‘Phuleri Amavasya’, their families used to worship the goddess. To increase fellow feeling, children used to visit seven households to collect vegetables with which a special dish is prepared. After worship, the families used to share it. Though maritime trading was a thing of the past, the tradition of preparing the special dish ‘Ghanta’ still continues.
