Special Correspondent

Postgraduate centre of Pondicherry varsity inaugurated

A BOON TO RURAL YOUTH: Mukut Mithi, Lt.Governor of Puducherry, at the inaugural of the postgraduate centre of Pondicherry University in Karaikal on Wednesday.

KARAIKAL: Puducherry Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi on Wednesday called upon the academic fraternity to reorient the higher education syllabi to make the graduates not only employable but also good entrepreneurs.

Inaugurating the postgraduate centre of the Pondicherry University at Perunthalaivar Kamarajar College of Education campus here, Mr. Mithi said the PG centre, first of its kind in the Puducherry Union Territory would offer MBA, MCA and M.Com (Business Finance) courses. He pointed out that 20 students would be admitted to each course and with the inauguration of the centre the long-pending demand of Karaikal people had been fulfilled.

Mr. Mithi said that the universalisation of primary and school education in the country had created a huge demand for higher education and pointed out that only seven per cent of the youth in the age group of 17 to 22 were able to get access to higher education in the country, particularly in villages and small towns higher education opportunities were meagre.

The Lt.Governor said that the PG centre in Karaikal was a good beginning in this direction and hoped that the Pondicherry University would enable rural youth gain access to higher education on a large scale.

Mr. Mithi appreciated J.A.K. Tareen, Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University and other officials for taking steps to open the PG centre in Karaikal in a record time. The Governor hoped that the centre would grow as an institution of excellence offering more courses with employment potential.

Prof. J.A.K.Tareen said Karaikal students would get 25 per cent reservation in admission to the courses offered by the PG centre.

M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, Minister for Education, Puducherry, said that the Government had allotted eight acres of land for the PG centre and hoped that it would grow into a full-fledged separate university in future.

N.Vasanthakumar, Karaikal Collector, A.M.H.Nazeem, Karaikal MLA and Leader of the Opposition in Puducherry Assembly, participated.
