“Remove restriction on night eateries”

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) on Wednesday urged the Puducherry Government to allow the night eateries, hawkers and petty shops to operate till 1.30 a.m.

Led by leader of the CITU T. Murugan, a delegation of the Association of Puducherry Night Eatery and Petty Shop Workers and Hawkers called on Chief Minister N.Rangasamy and explained to him the problems faced by them in the wake of the “oral order” from police that the stalls should not function after 11 p.m. Mr. Murugan told reporters here that the police had imposed restrictions on the night restaurants and the petty shops on the ground of maintaining law and order, particularly against the backdrop of the recent murders and the gang war in Puducherry and its suburbs.

The owners and workers of the night restaurants and hawkers were harassed by police after the order, he alleged. Functioning of the night eateries and stalls had nothing to do with the rise in the activities of the criminal gangs, he said.

In the last 18 months, as many as 20 murders had been committed in the town and its suburban areas. Most of these criminal activities had been carried out during day time. The government should not fail to take concrete measures to end unemployment, as most of the persons involved in the gang war were youth, he pointed out.

Mr.Murugan said the union would present separate memoranda to the Senior Superintendent of Police and the two Superintendents of Police highlighting the issue.
