COIMBATORE: There is a dire need to conserve water keeping in view the scarcity of water, P. Gomathinayagam, former Superintending Engineer, Public Works Department, said here recently.
Inaugurating a one-day seminar on “Water Resources Development and Environmental Management” at the Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Technology, organised jointly by the Department of Civil Engineering of the institute and EC division of PWD, he traced the history of irrigation and highlighted its importance.
He elaborated the various changes the system had undergone and role it played in agriculture in the pre-Independence and post-Independence times.
Organic farmer P. Selvaraj said: “Organic farming is very much needed for water conservation and a healthy environment. Weed and insect management should be handled with an eco-friendly approach. This will increase the yield and reduce the input cost as well as water requirement by 50 per cent.”
R. Ilangovan, Executive Engineer, EC division, PWD, lamented on the degradation of water bodies due to mismanagement. “Re-use and recycle of wastewater by implementing proper treatment methods shall be tapped for the water resources development”.
