This Day That Age
The Soviet satellite, now said to be taking photographs as it spins around the earth, was estimated to have travelled about 267,000 miles by early on October 10, the Soviet news agency Tass reported. By 03-00 GMT (08-30 IST) it had girdled the earth 78 times. According to Russian scientists it is likely to go on girdling the planet 16 times a day for “an undetermined period”. In New Zealand one observer said that with powerful night-glasses he saw not only the larger rocket casing hurtling through the skies last night but also the satellite itself – a smaller, dimmer object about five degrees in front of the casing, and on the same course.
