Letters to the Editor
The article “The Muslim question in Gujarat” (Oct. 9) was superb. It exposed how a community in a secular country is oppressed and neglected by every political party for various reasons. Had Narendra Modi been sincere about his claims of serving Gujarat, he would not have brought religion into politics. A person who mixes religion with politics is neither a good politician nor a true devotee. A. Antony Prabhu, Thiruvananthapuram The article, especially the reference to ‘Hindu’ and ‘Muslim’ roads, left me a little confused. Surely, the cleanliness of a road depends on the residents? Why, when a house is burnt down, it is a ‘Dalit’ house or a ‘Muslim’ house and why is a victim of crime a ‘Dalit,’ ‘Muslim’ or ‘Christian?’ When will we stop relating everything to caste or religion? Why can’t we see crime as crime and a victim as victim? Ram Krishna Tiwari, Chennai As Mr. Modi rightly pointed out (“flared up”), the very question where Muslims (and not Christians or Parsis) figure in his vision is irrelevant. Progress is meant for the State, not for a community. C.V. Subbaraman, Ahmedabad
