Corrections and clarifications

  • In an article “Is the nuclear power option safe for India?” (Op-Ed, October 9, 2007), the penultimate paragraph was: “Systematic studies on relative risks to human health from different sources of energy, including coal, oil, gas, and wind, and those from nuclear, hydel, and solar sources show that risks with gas, and hydel and nuclear-based ones, are much lower than with coal, oil, wind and solar-based ones. But the last-mentioned ones are suited only for small scale production of energy.” A few readers wondered whether it was right. The paragraph should have been: “Systematic studies on relative risks to human health from different sources of energy, including coal, oil, gas, and wind, and those from nuclear, hydel, and solar sources show that risks with gas, and hydel and nuclear-based ones, are much lower than with coal and oil. Wind and solar-based ones have the lowest risks but are suited only for small scale production of energy.” The mistake crept in at the editing-revision stage.

  • A sentence in “Congratulations, General?” (Editorial, October 8, 2007) was: “In the last six months, the entire energy of the state was focussed on securing another five years for the General from a dying electoral college without him having to resign as army chief.” It should have been “… without his having to resign as army chief.”

  • The Karnataka Assembly has 224 elected members and one nominated member. The total strength therefore is 225, and not 224 as stated in “Corrections and Clarifications”, October 10, 2007.
