Model code comes into effect

Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR: The announcement of the dates for the Gujarat Assembly elections by the Election Commission of India will put a brake on the flood of government-sponsored inaugurations and foundation stone laying ceremonies as the model election code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect.

For the last couple of months or so, the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, had been making whirlwind tours of the State on an average inaugurating or laying the foundation stones of three government-sponsored projects a day, besides attending political conventions of women, tribals, fishermen, and various other castes and communities.

The two major contenders for power in the State, the BJP and the Congress, welcomed the announcement of the two-phase polling, each claiming that the Election Commission had honoured their point of view.
