Chennai: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said that Montessori teaching programmes will be introduced in kindergarten classes in Chennai Corporation schools to help children enjoy their lessons better.
On Wednesday, he inaugurated a Montessori teaching programme at two Corporation schools. The programme would be extended to 28 other schools within a year.
The Thideer Nagar Corporation Middle School, Saidapet, and New Market Farm Middle School, Tondiarpet, are the first to start the programme. Play equipment worth Rs. 12 lakh has been bought for the schools.
In the first phase, six teachers have been trained with assistance from UNICEF. In the second phase, Rs. 2 crore would be spent on educational equipment and Rs. 25 lakh on training 96 teachers, Mr. Stalin said.
The programme’s focus would be on interactive learning, said Mayor M. Subramanian.
Later in the day, the Mayor held a review meeting of development works in Egmore constituency. A park on Gandhi Irwin Bridge Road would be developed at a cost of Rs. 40 crore. The Mayor said that several other projects are under way in the constituency.
