Notices issued over Red Fort Ramlila

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Union Government and the Archaeological Survey of India on a petition seeking quashing of the permission granted by ASI to two religious organisations perform Ramlila in the run-up to Dussehra against the foreground of the historic Red Fort here. The petitioner, a non-government organisation called Saaraansh, submitted that the permission to stage Ramlila would result in damage to the greenery of the park developed in the ground.

The petitioner submitted that there was no justification for granting the permission as there was a complete ban on organising any public function in the ground since 2003.

However, ASI counsel Meira Bhatia submitted that her client had granted the permission in keeping with the guidelines framed by it and she would file a copy of the guidelines in the Court.
