On a sour note: CPI secretary K. Narayana carrying away a bag of tamarind kept in a private cold storage unit in the city on Wednesday as part of the protest against alleged hoarding by traders.

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has asked the Government to initiate stringent action against traders who are creating artificial scarcity of essential commodities by illegally hoarding them, resulting in steep rise in prices.

As announced earlier, the CPI leaders and activists led by State secretary K. Narayana raided a private godown at Bairamalguda on the city outskirts on Wednesday.

The CPI leader showed tamarind and other essentials stocked in the godown claiming that the inaction of the Civil Supplies officials was leading to illegal storage of the commodities by the traders.

Sufficient stocks

While sufficient quantities of essentials were available to meet the requirements, their illegal hoarding was resulting in escalation of prices. Urging the Government take steps to unearth essentials illegally stocked in private godowns, he said the CPI would continue to raid the godowns and distribute the commodities to people if appropriate action was not initiated.

Dharna

Dr. Narayana who staged a dharna in front of the godown said he was not prepared to leave the venue till the officials concerned took action against the owners. He was, however, convinced after some officials spoke to him over telephone and assured that appropriate action would be initiated into the issue.

Senior CPI leaders and representatives of Mahila Samakhya accompanied Dr. Narayana during the raid of godowns.
