Ryots express difficulties in nursery planting

Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM: Farmers have expressed difficulties in planting nurseries under the system of rice intensification (SRI), to the Director of Rice Development, Ministry of Agriculture, Patna, M. C. Diwakar.

Stating that adoption of SRI helped to cut cultivation cost, the farmers told Mr. Diwakar that more labour and more time were required to complete planting exercise.

Weeding operation

They also told him that they were impressed with the weeding operation carried out using simple equipment under the SRI as the removed weeds got trampled in the soil and decomposed to enrich soil fertility.

Inspection

Mr.Diwakar inspected paddyfields, where the crop was cultivated using the SRI method, at Kilambi and Vishar near Kancheepuram recently.

The Joint Director (Agriculture), R. Anandan, the Assistant Director (Agriculture), Suresh Joe Bright, and other officials accompanied the Director of Rice Development.
