TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University would bring out an online directory of organisations working for mentally challenged and start a department to offer degree programmes on mental health, Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaiko said on Wednesday.

The directory, which would be a part of its official website, would reach the masses through the students and help in identifying the wandering mentally ill and providing them shelter in homes run by many non-governmental organisations, he said, after inaugurating three postgraduate diploma programmes on ‘child adolescent psychology,’ ‘organisational psychology’ and ‘counselling and guidance’ offered by ATHMA Institute of Mental Health and Social Sciences (AIMSS) in collaboration with the University.

The programme, held at the Shantivanam Home for Mentally Challenged, also marked the World Mental Health Day and seventh anniversary of TRUST Society, a non-governmental organisation supporting mentally ill.

Responding to Anbalayam founder T. K. S. Senthil Kumar’s plea to train NSS volunteers to counsel the mentally challenged, Dr. Ponnavaiko said that the department of mental health, to be commenced shortly, will rope in the psychological counsellors from various NGOs to guide the students in providing vocational training and counselling for the mentally ill.

The University, he said, has been providing vocational training for physically and mentally challenged individual and school dropouts under the banner of Institute of Entrepreneurship and Career Development Centre. A disabled-friendly computer centre would also be opened at the University shortly, he said.

Dr. Ponnavaiko felicitated three social workers and educationists including Sri Sivananda Balalaya Correspondent K. G. Meenakshi, Mr. Senthil Kumar and SOC SEED Director Sr. Maria Kamalam. In her acceptance speech, Dr. Meenakshi urged the educational institutions to integrate special children with the mainstream. Inclusive education, she observed, would go a long way in grooming the children with learning disabilities.

Bharathidasan University Registrar V. Radhakrishnan released a book titled ‘Psychiatry Made Easy,’ a publication of AIMSS.

Tamil Naadan, Sahitya Academy awardee, released AIMSS’s first monthly Tamil journal ‘Athma’ and founder of Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts S. M. George released AIMSS’s English periodical ‘Journal of Mental Health and Social Sciences.’ Rajashekar, MLA, Thottiyam, inaugurated ‘manual plate making’ project. TRUST executive secretary and AIMSS Director K. Ramakrishnan spoke.
