NCERT trains Afghan syllabus developers

A new leap forward in India–Afghanistan relations

NEW DELHI: Turning over a new leaf in bilateral cooperation between India and Afghanistan, academicians from the strife-torn country are here to understand a thing or two about developing their elementary education system.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) on Tuesday inaugurated a training-cum-workshop for pre-service teacher education curriculum developers at the elementary level for 40 participants from Afghanistan.

Aimed at strengthening the capacity of Afghan curriculum developers at the elementary level (Class I to IX), the 40-day workshop will help in shaping a brand new curriculum that will “not just be compatible to Afghanistan but also meet the standards of the world”.

“During the workshop we will discuss the overall scene of teachers’ education in India and Afghanistan, the strategy and pedagogy of teaching of subjects like science, social science and art education. NCERT will provide all the academic expertise in helping to revise their elementary teacher education curriculum for two years,” said the academic coordinator of the programme, S. K. Yadav of the Department of Teacher Education and Extension at NCERT.

The group will also visit the Regional Institutes of Education in Mysore and Ajmer, district level teacher education institutions working on elementary education, District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) and different schools to give them a first-hand experience.

The workshop was inaugurated by NCERT Joint Director G. Ravindara.

The delegation is led by Seddiq Weera, a senior policy adviser to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education, who hoped that the workshop would enhance the quality of his country’s teacher training curriculum after being reviewed by NCERT. “Afghans are aware of the high-quality education in India. Many want to study here. This workshop has resulted from an MoU signed between the Ministry of Education, Afghanistan, and the NCERT this year.” said Mr. Weera.
