CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday asked officials of the Highways Department to prepare feasibility and detailed project reports for laying four lanes on East Coast Road.

He also asked them to expedite work on the formation of an outer ring road from Vandalur to Ponneri-Panjetty. Chairing a meeting to review the progress of projects being implemented by the Highways Department, Mr. Karunanidhi asked the officials to expedite the widening of the Madhya Kailash-Siruseri stretch of the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram Road) into six lanes.

Bridge projects

As for road and bridge projects, worth Rs. 600 crore, taken up under the Chennai metropolitan development programme, he wanted the works completed by March other than those carried out at a cost of Rs. 240 crore.

The work on laying four lanes under the Rs.300-crore road improvement project for the Oragadam industrial park should be taken up initially with the available land.

He wanted road works in Tirupur, Coimbatore and Madurai executed by December. He also stressed the need for completing by March numerous repair and widening works.

He gave away keys for 59 jeeps and 21 cars bought at a cost of Rs. 3.5 crore for the Highways Department.

Among those who attended the meeting were Highways Minister M.P. Saminathan, Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy, Highways Secretary K. Allaudin and Finance Secretary K. Gnanadesikan.
