‘Brahma Kamalam’ blooms before Brahmothsavam

TIRUPATI: In a rare spectacle, ‘Brahma Kamalam’ a flower said to be endemic only in the snow-capped Himalayan hill ranges has blossomed in the tiny garden of a nature-loving resident of Varadarajan Nagar in Tirupati. It is a rare coincidence that the flower known for its sweet fragrance has blossomed in the colony close to the foot of the Seven Hills where the Navarathri Brahmothsavam is all set to get off to a holy start from Friday.

According to Lakshmi Bharathi a house-wife and a Bonsai club member, the plant was given to them by some ‘sadhus’ from Himalayas more than a year and half ago saying that it would bloom only once in a year. In fact we lost hope that the plant would ever bloom as nothing happened despite our careful nurturing of it.

But to the surprise of Bharathi, three days ago all its leaves shrunk into the shape of a huge bud emitting aroma all over.

Again it was late on Tuesday night that there was a sudden burst of fragrance in the air and when all in the household rushed out, they saw the flower in full bloom with all splendour providing feast to the eyes and senses of the neighbours who landed at the house to see the ‘Himalayan wonder’.
