By-poll nominees yet to be named

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: The election committee of the Madhya Pradesh BJP has approved and sought the party’s clearance for candidature of Dhyaneshwari Bhatere, widow of former State Minister Dilip Bhatere, for the October 30 by-election to fill the Lanji seat in the Assembly. The seat fell vacant on Mr. Bhatere’s demise.

The election committee has reached a consensus in favour of Ms. Bhatare. The party candidate would be announced in New Delhi. The last date for filing nominations is October 12. The BJP is determined to retain the Lanji seat. Mr. Bhatere, who was thrice elected to the Assembly on BJP ticket and once as an independent, had won this seat for the first time in 1993.

He was popular in the constituency and was known for his proximity to the farmers, especially due to the “Krishi Seva Kendra” founded by him.

The opposition Congress is also in the process of deciding its candidate for the by-election.
