Villagers block highway

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Residents of Thulukkankurichi near Vembakottai blocked the Sivakasi-Sankarankoil highway on Thursday, seeking action against an individual who prevented construction of a school building.

The protest was led by the panchayat president, R. Ramalakshmi. The protestors said that an individual, claiming ownership of the land, prevented construction of the building for the Panchayat Union Middle School under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan.

However, when Revenue and Police officials intervened, the individual promised that he would not hinder the work. The protestors left after blocking the road for nearly an hour.
