S. Prasad

Harvest may commence by end of October

Krishnagiri: Groundnut farmers in Krishnagiri district who registered low productivity levels for the last two years have achieved a good yield this season. Officials from the Department of Agriculture said a bumper crop was expected this time thanks to favourable weather conditions and adequate supply of water for irrigation.

Out of 1,52,100 hectares under rain-fed cultivation in the district groundnut is cultivated in about 16,000 hectares. Of this around 5,000 hectares is cultivated in Hosur, followed by 4,400 hectares in Denkanikottai, 5,000 hectares in Krishnagiri and 1,600 hectares in Uthangkarai taluks. Apart from this rain-fed raagi is cultivated in around 57, 000 hectares.

Presently raagi crop is in last stage and is luxuriant by the normal rainfall received by late August and September. The crop is expected to be harvested by December this year.

According to sources in Department of Agriculture rain-fed sowing alone contributes to about 75 per cent of the total area in the district. The productivity level of groundnut in this Kharif season has increased by 15 per cent compared to the corresponding period of 2006.

While harvest of rain-fed groundnut has already commenced in Hosur and Denkanikottai taluks farmers in Krishnagiri and Uthangkarai taluks have not yet commenced harvest as they had taken up sowing only at a later stage.

A majority of groundnut farmers in Hosur and Denkanikottai are hopeful of a bumper harvest when compared with the previous year. High yielding varieties like JL 24 has yielded on an average 600 to 800 kgs of wet pods per acre and TMV7 700 to 900 kgs wet pods per acre.

In Krishnagiri and Uthangkarai taluks harvest may commence by the end of October or the first week of November. At present groundnut prices are ruling at Rs.670 to Rs.720 per bag when compared with Rs.300 to Rs.400 over the previous year. Farmers could expect a normal yield of 600 to 700 kgs per acre sources said.
