CHANDIGARH: The government agencies and millers made a record procurement of 372,439 metric tons of paddy in a single day in Punjab on Wednesday as total procurement during the past 15 days touched 4.52 million tons. Out of the total procurement of 4,052,692 metric tons of paddy in all the mandis of Punjab, the government agencies got 2,952,873 metric tons of paddy (72.9 per cent) till Wednesday evening whereas millers lifted 1,099,819 metric tons (27.1 per cent). PUNGRAIN procured 656,299 metric tons (22.2 per cent) so far, MARKFED 668,636 metric tons (22.6 per cent), and PUNSUP 794,168 metric tons (26.9 per cent). FCI was able to procure 36,576 metric tons (1.2 per cent), an official spokesman said here on Thursday. The spokesman said district Ferozepur with 839,755 metric tons was leading in procurement operations whereas Ludhiana with 348,076 metric tons of procurement was at the second spot and Kapurthala with 321,296 metric tonnes ranked third. The spokesman said that the farmers of Punjab had been paid Rs.1,209.15 crore for the paddy procured by government agencies alone during the past 14 days. An amount of Rs.1,710.93 crore has already been allocated to different Districts Food Controllers to ensure timely payment to the farmers. — PTI
