Government for steps to monitor NGOs’ activities

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: The government will take steps to monitor and regulate the activities of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including the way they spend the funds received from governments and international agencies, Minister for Social Welfare M. Kandasamy told reporters here on Wednesday.

The government had issued letters to over 200 NGOs asking them to correct their accounts in three months and ensure that the money reached the beneficiaries. “We may even make it mandatory for the NGOs to get proper registration with a license and have auditors from the government to look into the way they spend the funds,” he added.

Polyester clothes

On the issue of distributing polyester clothes to families living below the poverty line for Deepavali, Mr. Kandasamy said even if there was a delay, the government would only supply polyester saris and shirts that were to be procured from outside the State through a process of tender.

“We will give shirts instead of a towel and procure lungis from the weavers of PONTEX. We will also distribute blouse materials along with the saris. From the next year we will make arrangements so that long-lasting polyester saris and shirts can be manufactured at the government-run AFT Mills.” The water in a tank in Kirumampakkam area, which was contaminated, was being cleaned by the PWD and Local Administration Department, he said, adding that he had requested the Chief Minister to release funds to a family in the area that had lost two persons.

Aid increased

The Minister also announced that the cash assistance for encouraging inter-caste marriages has been increased from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 50,000 (Rs. 20,000 as cash and Rs. 30,000 as National Saving Scheme Bond).
